Camellia Club of Mobile

.....a letter from our President, Jim Dwyer

August 2008

Dear Camellia Lovers,

I am looking forward to another great camellia year.  The board has come up with an outstanding series of programs for the coming year.  As you can see from the schedule, we’ll cover the basics of camellia growing including soil analysis, selecting recommended varieties, cultivation, propagation and gibbing.  Vickie Baugh is planning another exceptional series of camellia garden tours and there will be plant raffles and auctions.  This year we invite members to travel in groups to other club meetings and our club will extend invitations to other clubs to visit our meetings.

I encourage everyone to get involved in promoting the growing of camellias.  An example of what an interested group of camellia lovers can accomplish is the planting of camellias in Heritage Park in Foley.  Ray Calloway contacted a group of club members in the Baldwin County area and organized the planting of camellias.

For me, learning from other camellia club members was a valuable experience.  When I joined the camellia club, I knew very little about camellias.  I found that one of the best ways of learning about camellias and their culture was to talk to the many members who were knowledgeable about camellias.  I hope that our meetings will continue to support this kind of learning by allowing time for people to get acquainted, socialize, and have informal discussions about camellia culture.

I hope that the club can meet the needs and expectations of all members.  I want to encourage members to give the board and me suggestions about what needs improving, what needs changing, and what should stay the same.

See you at the September meeting,

Jim Dwyer
